Week 13 Story: Alice and the Jabberwocky

Alice fell, kerplump, onto the soft rug of the Looking-Glass room. She just KNEW that this was a real room with everything exactly the same, but opposite, of her room at home. She looked around and found that everything in the room visible from home was exactly the same, but outside of her mirror's view, things were magically different. The pictures on the walls moved, the flowers in the planters outside turned to wave to her.
"How do you do?" Alice called to them. They blushed and turned away, giggling. How peculiar, Alice thought to herself. On the reading table, she noticed a chess set with their pieces moving all about.
"Why hello to you too!" Alice called to them, rushing over.
"Shhhhhhh" the pieces cried out. The pawns ran behind the King and Queen. The knights brandished their teeth at her. Bewildered, Alice stooped down so that she at eye-level with them. Her eyes were wide as she asked what she had done.
"You'll alert the Jabberwocky!" The king answered, all of the pieces nodding their heads in agreement.
"The jabberwocky? What is a Jabberwocky?" Alice asked curiously.
"Oh I mustn't tell you," The King replied.
"Oh you should tell the giant." Argued the Queen.
"Who is the giant?" Alice asked as they quibbled.
"Why YOU!" They turned to Alice, gesturing towards her.
"Shh now you're speaking too loud," claimed the King towards the Queen.
"You are two then," and the pair argued some more. After a few moments had gone by, Alice tapped on the top of their chess board to bring them to attention.
"What is the Jabberwocky?"
"Fine," said the queen, "I will tell you a story.

Twas brillig, and the slithy tovesDid gyre and gimble in the wabe;

'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

And now that very same Jabberwocky lives in the house. And he'll come lick you up and CHOMP-- eat you up!" The queen warned, finishing up her tale with a warning, "Be still and quiet so that the great jabberwocky does not eat you."

Alice was quite scared. FRIGHTENED actually. She decided it was time to go back home. She crawled up onto the mantle and hopped through the looking-glass, just as she heard a great beast roar.

Author's Note: This tory takes place in the Looking-Glass House, a place in Lewis Carroll's wonderland. In the original story, Alice falls into the Looking-Glass House, but the inhabitants of the room are unable to see her. She reads a poem about the Jabberwocky. I recently watched A Quiet Place (great movie) so I decided to make the Jabberwocky a villain in this story that was triggered by sound. I tried to keep the style of Carroll's writing similar with the italicized and capitalized words showing emphasis.

  1. Wow! I have never seen a picture of a Jabberwocky before! I always think about the America's Best Dance Crew group and it's awesome that they got their name from this mythological creature! Your author's notes are also really useful and it helps understand what you are creating! Thanks for sharing your story and I am excited to hopefully read more !
