Reading Notes: Hans Christian Andersen (Reading A)
- The Princess and the Pea is written very whimsically
- It ends with "There, that is a true story"
- The emperor has a new outfit for every hour of the day
- The swindlers have a cloth that is "invisible" if the wearer is incompetent or unsuited for their role
- Uses a lot of dialogue
- Very repetitive use of phrases and words
- Funny play on people's egos
- It takes a child to admit what no one else will
- The brave tin soldier remembers his paper maiden to help him be brave
- The tin soldier would not show that he was afraid
- He was swallowed by a fish
- And returned to the house of the boy
- He gets thrown into a fire
- The paper doll (that he is in love with) floats into the stove with him
- They both die but their remains are in the shape of a heart
- Lots of long sentences with clauses
- Heavy use of adjectives
- A sip "floats through the air" with the help of eagles
- The angel's blood is heavy and sinks the ship
- The prince doesn't learn
- He is then overcome by a gnat
- The Little Match Girl always makes me want to cry
- It ends kind of sad-happy
