Topic Research: The Bisterne Dragon

I will be elaborating on my idea for the expansion of the legend of the Bisterne Dragon. This story involves a terrorizing dragon, a helpless village, and a brave knight, who ends up losing his mind over his role in killing the dragon.

The first chapter will outline the relationship between the dragon and the village of Burley. Sir Maurice de Burkeley is the lord of the land and is called upon by the villagers to slay the dragon. I think there are a couple ways I could write in Burkeley's involvement with the dragon:
a). Burkeley's fiancé is taken by the dragon (Burkeley in this case is a young man)
b). Burkeley's daughter is taken by the dragon (In this case, Burkeley is an older man)
c). Burkeley is a noble knight who fights the dragon because it is his honorable duty

The second chapter will talk about the preparation of the fight between the dragon and the lord. There are a few ways this part of the story can be portrayed:
a). The lord meets an old man who is familiar with magic and trickery who offers to tell the man how to slay the dragon in return for the lord's greatest jewel. The plot twist is then that the lord's fiancé/daughter's name is Opal/Ruby/etc..
b). The lord is cunning and figures out how to win the fight

The third chapter will detail the fight. Some versions of the story include multiple attempts at defeating the dragon. Some include the use of hounds to distract and attack the dragon. In the end, the lord loses his mind over the battle. He dies on top of the dragon's body (which has become a hill) and becomes a yew tree.

I want to tell this story from the point of view of two young lovers who are picnicking under the yew tree and telling the tale of the dragon. The last chapter will be told from the view of the lord, who is now the yew tree.
