Feedback Strategies

I'm excited to read two articles about giving feedback. As a Team Lead for I-CCEW this semester, a lot of my job is giving feedback. This is definitely an area I'm look to improve upon.

Be a Mirror: First, I really like Dweck's belief that mindsets are malleable and that they are directly shaped by how and when you give feedback. The mirror concept elaborates on the necessity for feedback to be delivered without judgement. This is achieved by delivering feedback with 5 qualities:

  • Deliver specific feedback
  • Focus on what is being done rather than what is missing
  • Focus on the process
  • Make the the feedback generalized enough so that it can be applied to all situations
  • Take yourself out of the feedback
Criticizing Praise: Strauss says that praise is destructive because it devalues the action that merits positive feedback. Praises are judgements while feedback is an impersonal analysis of work quality.

I think this is a really interesting way to look at praise because I really value praise and when I don't receive praise, I feel like I'm not successfully doing my job.

Thumbs up for great feedback. Web Source: False Praise
