The Growth Mindset
Prior to this assignment, I had not hear of Carol Dweck, but I had heard of the Growth Mindset. My mother was a special education teacher, and she talked a lot about teaching her students to grow from errors rather than to accept them. I definitely used to have a fixed mindset in most areas of my life. Thankfully, when I cam to college I was presented with challenges that forced me to adopt more of the growth mindset. At OU, I had to learn to accept the challenge that schoolwork now poses. I had to learn to study and to ask for help. I'm going to look forward to learning more about the growth mindset because I think it is a positive and healthy approach to learning that encourages trial and error rather than admonishing failure. I like the idea of saying "Not Yet" instead of "Not Ever". This semester I will be balancing three upper division science courses, a language course, an internship, and a part-time job along with this class. The growth mindset will help me manage my time and remain positive in times of stress.

Haley, first of all it's so awesome that your mom is a special education teacher! I love that. Second, it's very mature that you can own up to having a fixed mindset. Realizing you have one is the first step to changing it, so I hope reading about the growth mindset has helped you do that. I agree that changing your mindset can even influence your time management and every day attitude, so it's an important change for a busy college student. You can do it - keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHowdy Haley! I think a lot of people are in the same boat as you. In high school, it's easy to tell yourself that there are somethings you're good at and other things you aren't. It's still possible to skate by! In college, I think you're forced to try new things and grow in areas of weakness. For me, that meant getting better at time management. Thoughtful post!
ReplyDeleteHi, Haley!
ReplyDeleteI will be teaching Special Education after graduation, and loved hearing that your mother used Dweck's Growth Mindset theories to encourage her students. I would love to learn more about the phrasing and examples that she found most helpful in her classroom! I could not agree more that the idea of growth mindset has gotten me through some difficult times in college, and cannot wait to see how it helps me to persevere in the future!
